How To Apply For Passport?

Passport is the most important document regarding the citizenship. In fact, every citizen should have the passport. Passport becomes essential when you have to travel abroad for studies, business and trip, etc. In India, passport issues are operated under Passport Act 1967. The Government of India has discretionary power to issue different types of passports. These types include Ordinary passport, official passport, emergency certificate, diplomatic passport and certificate of identity.

No matter what type of passport you want, you have to apply for new passport application form.

Time has gone when you have to wait in long queues. But due to the great efforts of Ministry of External Affairs, the passport system has an online portal. This portal is known as Passport Seva. This portal deals with all problems related to passport application and submission.

In this guide, we will discuss about three different methods to apply and submit new passport application form.

Passport Via e-Form Submission:

Here are the simple steps to submit passport application form as e-form:

  • First of all, you need to get registered in order to get e-form. E-form is available for both fresh and reissue of passport. You need to register at the Passport Seva Portal.
  • Once you have created the account on the Passport Seva Portal, login to your account.
  • Download the e-form as per your needs. It can be for fresh passport of the reissue of passport.
  • Now you have to fill the form with the required information. Once, you are done with filling, click on Validate & Save Button. But doing this, the XML file will be created on your computer.
  • Next step involves uploading of the XML file on the Passport Seva website. Don’t upload the PDF format, it is not accepted by the system.
  • Now click on the option of Pay And Schedule Appointment, this will allow you to schedule a meeting at Passport Seva Kendra.
  • Once the appointment is done, the next step is online payment. You can do it via credit/debit card or internet banking.
  • Passport Seva website offers a fee calculator to determine the exact fees.
  • Print out the Application Reference Number.
  • Visit the Passport Seva Kendra on the scheduled date for appointment. Don’t forget to bring your original documents!

Passport Via Online Form Submission:

Here are the simple steps for online form submission:

  • Create an account at Passport Seva to register yourself.
  • Login to your account, once email verification is done.
  • Tap on Aply For Fresh Passport or Reissue of Passport.
  • Here you can fill the form with required information.
  • Now submit the form and click on link of Pay and Schedule Appointment.
  • Your appointment will be scheduled at nearby Passport Seva Kendra.
  • You can pay the fee online via credit/debit card or internet banking.
  • Print out the Application Reference Number.
  • Visit the PSK on scheduled date and bring original documents with you!

Submission For Passport In Person:

  • You can download the application form from the Passport Seva website. Print them out on A4 size paper.
  • Otherwise, you can get the form from nearby District Passport Cell for Rs.10/.
  • Fill the form with required information and attach the attested photocopies of essential documents.
  • Take the application to District Passport Cell. Once an officer is satisfied with the form and documents, pay the fee via demand draft.
  • Now collect the letter of acknowledgment. This letter contains the file number for future tracking of application!
