How to Apply for Driving License

A Driving License is an important and valid identity proof recognized by the Government of India. Possessing a driving license certifies that the person holding it is qualified to drive anywhere in India. Whoever wishes to drive a vehicle in India has to have a driving license.

If you wish to apply for a Driving License online, visit the official website the RTO and download the form. Submit the form with the required documents. You will be granted a Learning License after you successfully clear the first level test at the RTO. After a month, when you apply for another test and pass that too, you will get your Driving License.

Steps for applying for driving License online in India

  • If you wish to apply for a driving License online, you can do the same by going to the official website of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways – the Sarathi website
  • Click on the ‘New Driving License’ under the ‘Sarathi Services’ option on the homepage
  • On the new page that opens, you can see all the instructions on the online application process. After thoroughly going through the instructions, download the form and fill in the details asked

Below mentioned is the online application process

  • Go to the sarathi website and download the online application form
  • Fill the form as per the instructions are given on screen
  • Click on ‘Submit’
  • In the case the applicant is a minor, take a print out of the form and Part D is to be filled out and signed by the parent/guardian at the nearest RTO
  • Upload all the required documents along with the application form (proof of age, proof of address, learner’s License  number)
  • A Web Application Number will be generated after submitting, which is later used to track the application status
  • Once the application has been processed, an SMS will be sent to your registered phone number

Part A:

The following details are to be entered on the form:

  • Type of License (Learners or Driving License)
  • State (select from the drop-down menu)
  • Name of RTO/DTO (select from the drop-down menu)
  • Applicant’s name
  • Gender
  • Date of birth
  • Place of birth (optional)
  • Country by birth
  • Email address (optional)
  • Name of either father/husband/guardian in full
  • Permanent address proof
  • Present address
  • Citizenship status
  • Educational qualification
  • Identification marks (optional)
  • Blood group

Part B:
This form contains information on the type of vehicle she/he is trying to get a License for The Registration Certificate number is to be mentioned

Part C:
The enclosures the applicant is submitting with the application are to be listed. The mentioned documents are proof of the applicant’s address, identity, and age, learner’s license issued to the applicant, along with other required details.

Part D:
This part of the form has all the declaration that the applicant has submitted the required documents and enclosures if they apply to him/her, including the medical fitness certificate, License documents, proof of exemptions etc.

Part E:

  • This part of the form is applicable for those who are applying for Learner’s License and has a document that gives the parent/guardian’s permission for their ward to apply for a Learner’s License
  • This is valid in cases where the applicant is between 16-18 years of age at the time of application
  • The section is to be signed in the presence of the Licensing Authority by the parent/guardian
  • After completing the form, the applicant can submit it online by clicking on the ‘Submit’ button at the bottom of the form
  • After submitting the form, an auto-generated Web Application Number will appear on the screen. Take a note of the number for future reference in case you wish to check the status of the application
