The Special Protection Group (SPG) was raised in 1985 with the intention to give proximate security cover to the Prime Minister, former Prime Ministers and their immediate family members. SPG officers are ingrained in high leadership qualities, professionalism, knowledge of proximate security and inculcate the culture of the head from the front. SPG has strived to gain this by adopting innovative methods not only in its own working but also in the overall security arrangements in collaboration with the IB and State/ UT police forces. The reason for the high leadership qualities, professionalism, and knowledge of its officers that SPG ensures fail-proof and zero-error security for its Protectees.

From the beginning of SPG, the saga of bravery is very well established. SPG officers have been so far honored by 01 Shaurya Chakra, 39 President’s Police Medals for Distinguished Service and 297 Police Medals for Meritorious Service. SPG also has the awarded of its first Director being awarded the Padma Shri. However, SPG is no longer satisfied with being the best in India and is aspiring beyond the national boundaries and has entered into a new phase in its evolution. One could say with an element of confidence that the SPG ranks amongst the best organizations of its genre in the whole world. SPG officers are trained to offer, if mandatory, the supreme sacrifice to ensure that the sacred task assigned to the organization by the Government is fulfilled at all costs. SPG has accomplished 33 years of glorious history.

Special Protection Group (SPG) is entrusted with the work of giving proximate security to the Prime Minister of India, former Prime Minister and their immediate family members. Since its starting in the year 1985, SPG is giving security to its protectees at their office and residence, in local functions and during internal as well as external tours.

SPG operates on the motto of “Zero Error” and “Culture of Excellence”. SPG personnel has always discharged their duties and responsibilities with devotion, dedication, hard work and courage within India and in foreign territories. Each SPG personnel dedicates himself wholly to uphold the integrity of the nation and the spirit behind SPG motto “Shauryam Samarpanam Surakshanam” (i.e. bravery, devotion, and protection).

The charter of SPG covers great responsibility on its members and this required to be shouldered without any compromise on standards of performance the Nation expects. New initiatives in modernizing and capacity constructing of the force are a continuous process.

The training curriculum and job atmosphere in SPG encourages every member to recognize his/ her individual capabilities so as to deliver optimum results and contribute meaningfully to bring glory to this elite organization. It is expected from all persons of the organization, irrespective of their cadre and category, to organize the assigned duties with utmost dedication and devotion.

Special Protection Group has earned a name for itself on account of dedicated commitment and high levels of professionalism. The professional acumen of SPG personnel in protecting its protectees has been vastly appreciated. This has only been possible on account of the continuous efforts and hard work put in by all force members. It has gained the reputation of a multi-skilled, professionally competent and tech­savvy force, which has also been continuously adapting itself to face new security challenges.

In the region of the prevailing security environment in the country and the threats emanating from the trans-national terrorism, the force has to constantly strive towards technological modernization and skill up gradation. The future is bound to demand regular changes in our organization, in our administrative system, in our recruitment process, and in our training. Protecting the SPG protectees on the 24×7 basis for years continuously makes this special force versatile.
