Muppavarapu Venkaiah Naidu (born 1 July 1949) is an Indian politician and the present Vice-President of India. He has been interested in politics since childhood. The plight of the ordinary man, poor and the downtrodden are very well understood by Shri Naidu. He has done hard work for the people of his community and launched several schemes and a social service organization “Swarna Bharath Trust” to serve the poor and the an of his hometown Nellore. An important leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party, he also worked as its national president from 2002 to 2004. Before, he was the Union Cabinet Minister for Rural Development in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government.

Personal life and family

M.Venkaiah Naidu was born on 1st of July 1949 in the Nellore district of the Indian State of Andhra Pradesh, to Late Shri Rangaiah Naidu and Smt. Ramanamma. He finished his schooling from Zilla Parishad High School, Bucchireddy Palem (Nellore), and pursued his bachelor’s degree in politics and diplomatic studies from V. R. College. After that, he acquired a bachelor’s degree in law with a specialization in international law from Andhra University College of Law, Visakhapatnam. He was a swayamsevak in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and got in ABVP during his college days. He was elected as the president of the students’ union of University affiliated to the Andhra University. He came into the focus for his main role in the Jai Andhra Movement of 1972. While Kakani Venkata Ratnam guided the movement from Vijayawada, Naidu took an active part in the agitation in Nellore, until it was called off a year later. In 1974, he became the convener of the anti-corruption Jayaprakash Narayan Chhatra Sangharsh Samiti of Andhra Pradesh.

Political career

A brilliant public speaker and with a keen interest in politics, Shri Naidu joined ABVP as a student leader in 1973. He came into the spotlight for his major role in the Jai Andhra Movement of 1972. Shri Naidu protested against the Emergency, fought for the fundamental rights and was even imprisoned in the dark days of Emergency. He was a swayam Sevak in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and get in ABVP during his college days. It’s the second time that Shri Venkaiah Naidu has worked as the Cabinet Minister. He worked as the National President of BJP from 2002 to 2004. In the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government, Shri Venkaiah Naidu was the Union Cabinet Minister for Rural Development (2002). To alter the face of rural India, he had mentioned out a three-pronged strategy. By 2004, Shri Naidu had also set up 14 lakh Women’s self-assist groups. He worked as the Minister of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation, Urban Development and Information and Broadcasting in the cabinet of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In his tenure, he has launched several schemes and reforms for the development of the rural class. Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojna was one such yojana.

 He tried to get in many multinational companies pertaining to rural development. Shri Venkaiah Naidu even initiated “Swarna Bharath Trust”, a social service organization to help the poor and the downtrodden of his hometown Nellore. He was elected by the BJP for Rajya Sabha from Rajasthan and was elected. His contributed significantly in the cause of the farmers, rural people and towards the development of the backward areas. He was the Minister of Urban Development, Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation and Parliamentary Affairs from 2014-2017. He also worked as the Minister of Information and Broadcasting from 2016-2017 he also won the Vice-Presidential Elections which were held on August 5th,2017.
