What is the National Informatics Center

National Informatics Centre (NIC) was introduced in 1976 and established as a “main builder” of e-Government / e-Governance applications up to the grassroots level as well as a promoter of digital opportunities for progressive development. NIC has its own network namely NICNET through which it is well connected with all the Ministries /Departments of the Central Government, 36 State Governments/ Union Territories, and about 708 District administrations of India.  NIC is a premier science and technology organization of the Government of India in informatics services and information and communication technology (ICT) applications. It is part of the Indian Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology’s Department of Electronics & Information Technology. NIC computer cells are located in almost all Ministry bhawans (buildings) of the central government and Apex offices including the Indian Prime Minister’s office, the Indian Presidential Palace (Rashtrapati Bhavan) and India’s Parliament House (Sansad Bhavan). It also provides support to grassroots-level administration.

NIC is implementing Information Technology Projects, in partnership with Central and State Governments. NIC works to ensure that the latest technology in all areas of IT is available to its users. It is one of the total solution providers to the Government and is actively involved in most of the IT-enabled applications and has changed the mindset of the working community in the Government to make use of the latest state of the art technology in their day to day activities to provide better services to the citizens.
