There are twelve new moons in a year except Purushottam month, which have different names. The Amavasya of Bhadrapada is called Kushotpatini Amavasya or Kushotpatini Amavasya. It is also called Pithori Amavasya or Pola Pithora. It is also clear from the name that there is some other priority in it.It is clear from Vishnu Purana that due to the continuous drinking of the moon’s nectar by the gods, the moon’s arts are weakened and then as soon as it becomes completely weakened till the new moon, the sun god re-nourishes the moon with Shukla Pratipada. Then the God Gana drinks the nectar of the half-month collected. After this, the Sun God again strengthens the Moon. The time when only two remaining moons enter the Sun’s circle and reside in its ray called Ama, that date is called Amavasya.
It is clear from the religious story associated with this fast that Mother Parvati had first informed the Indranis about this fast. On this day, sixty four idols are made by kneading the dough, which is dedicated to all the goddesses including Bhagwati Durga. Today is also said to be the best time to worship Shri Vishnu. On this day everyone is worshiped by installing idols on the seat. Women keep this fast for their children and husband. Due to the virtuous effect of this fast, childless children get children. Apart from this, the child is also blessed with longevity and good health. This fast and worship of Kushotpatini Amavasya is performed only by married women.
Kushotpatini Amavasya is also one of the dates which are said to be suitable for performing Shradh-Pind donation in the name of ancestors throughout the year.It is said that on this day it is very good to offer Pind Daan, Tarpan, Shradh and Brahmin food in the river or water zodiac.This gives freedom from Pitra Dosh. It is mentioned in the scriptures that the ancestors, being pleased with the fulfillment of this new moon, bless the doer to continue on the path of progress with the family. The special significance of this new moon is also because its effect leads to the welfare of both husband and children. In this fast, by fasting throughout the day, worshiping Shodashopachar in the evening gives the desired results. The sense of public welfare and public welfare is embodied in this fast.
