Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra took out a roadshow on Wednesday in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s constituency Varanasi Wednesday afternoon in the last leg of the Lok Sabha election campaign.
Congress supporters thronged outside the Banaras Hindu University as Priyanka began her two-hour roadshow from the gate of the university. The roadshow will conclude at Kashi Vishwanath Temple where she will pay obeisance.
The Congress show of strength in Varanasi comes nearly three weeks after Modi held his own roadshow a day before filing his nomination papers.
Varanasi is one of the 13 Lok Sabha constituencies in eastern Uttar Pradesh which will go to polls in the seventh and last phase of the general elections on Sunday.
The Congress had fielded Ajay Rai against Modi after speculation had swirled that Priyanka herself would contest against the Prime Minister. Rai is a five-term MLA and had lost heavily to Modi in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.
In her campaign trail so far, Priyanka Gnadhi has often accused Modi of visiting a number of countries, but not having time to meet the poor and farmers in his own constituency.
“The PM has visited America, hugged Obama ji (the then US president Barack Obama), went to Japan and played drums there. Africa, Europe, whichever name you take, China, Pakistan — where he had biryani,” she said at a rally in Bathinda on Tuesday.
Later in the day in Pathankot, Priyanka described Modi as the “biggest ‘abhineta’” (actor), who, she said, had spent the last five years campaigning with “lies and falsehoods”.
The Congress general secretary who is in charge of eastern Uttar Pradesh, had visited Varanasi once earlier in March. During that trip she had addressed a Congress workers’ convention in Varanasi, took a boat ride from Balua Ghat Ramnagar to Dashashwamedh Ghat and participated in a road show from Dashashwamedh Ghat to the gate of Kashi Vishwanath temple.
On Thursday, BSP chief Mayawati and Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav are scheduled to address a joint rally in Varanasi for their alliance candidate Shalini Yadav
