SRINAGAR: Terrorists fired upon a CRPF party on Tuesday, killing a paramilitary trooper in Bijbehara area of south Kashmir’s Anantnag district. The attackers also lobbed a grenade on the security personnel, but it didn’t explode and was later defused by the bomb disposal squad in Sangam area, said a senior police officer.
The jawan, Shiv Lal, sustained bullet injuries in his chest in the attack and was rushed to Bijbehara sub-district hospital in a critical condition. Doctors there referred him to the government medical college and hospital in Anantnag for specialised treatment, but he succumbed on the way.
Medical superintendent of GMC Anantnag, Dr Abdul Majeed Mehrab, said that Lal was declared brought dead at the facility.
Soon after the attack, security forces launched a cordon-and-search operation in the area to trace the perpetrators, a senior police officer said.
