Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav will be contesting the April-May Lok Sabha elections from Azamgarh. Akhilesh’s father Mulayam Singh Yadav is the sitting MP from Azamgarh.
In a list of two candidates that the party put out on its Twitter handle on Sunday, it also named Azam Khan as its candidate from Rampur. Azam Khan is the sitting MLA from Rampur.
This brings to an end the speculation that party patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav will once again contest from his seat.
Mulayam Singh Yadav will now contest from Mainpuri, from where he had won in 2014 but had later resigned.
This announcement has also put to rest speculation that Akhilesh may contest the upcoming elections from Kannauj, where his wife Dimple Yadav is the sitting MP. The party had named Dimple as its candidate in a list of candidates it had announced on March 8.
Azamgarh, from where Akhilesh will now be contesting the election, is seen as an easy constituency for the Samajwadi Party.
The party has also released its list of star campaigners. Among the more prominent names, that figure in the list is the Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, Ram Gopal Yadav, Azam Khan, Jaya Bachchan, Dimple Yadav, Tej Pratap Yadav.
Mulayam Singh Yadav does not figure in the list of star campaigners released by the party.
