Govt in talks with automobile firms to make ventilators

NEW DELHI: The Centre is in talks with leading automobile manufacturers exploring the possibility of producing ventilators and other equipment in their factories to meet the surging demand for critical care for Covid-19 patients, sources said.
Two high level meetings — one each on Monday and Tuesday — have taken place with top executives from five companies — Maruti, M&M, Hyundai, Tata and Honda. These meetings were also attended by officials from the cabinet secretariat, health ministry, Indian Council of Medical Research and department of pharmaceuticals.
“These firms have expressed concern about the current situation and said they have required infrastructure and technology to produce ventilators. Certain modifications to their existing model are required and for that they will seek the drawings and prototypes from other foreign companies,” a DoP official told TOI.
The automobile companies have told DoP that they will come up with a detailed plan and timeline of production within two days, he said.
