A video shows a group of Muslim men taking to the streets. Supposedly, the men, part of a religious organisation in Kerala’s Alappuzha, were protesting the appointment of a District Collector because of his Brahmin identity. The archived versions of such posts can be seen.
AFWA’s investigation found that the claim was misleading. A protest was held against the appointment of Alappuzha Collector Sriram Venkitaraman. But it was because the officer has been accused of killing a journalist while driving under the influence of alcohol. In the viral video, we observed a signboard for a “Poly Dental Clinic” on a building. We searched for this clinic on Google Maps The address, in this photo, can be clearly seen as “Malappuram.
We searched on Facebook for videos of recent protest marches in Malappuram and found several similar-looking videos of a protest shared on July 30. The videos purportedly showed a march to the Malappuram Collectorate held in protest against the appointment of Venkitaraman as the Collector of Alappuzha.
