Press Council notice to daily for headline ‘ridiculing’ Prez

NEW DELHI: The Press Council of India on Wednesday took suo motu cognisance of a story by an English daily and handed out a show cause notice to the daily’s editor for its “projection” of the President of India “in a satirical manner”.
The daily had, in its front page headline, indulged in word play over President Ram Nath Kovind nominating former CJI Ranjan Gogoi to Rajya Sabha. The council said the headline violated the norms of journalistic conduct and that “satirical comments ridiculing and denigrating the first citizen of the country is uncalled for and beyond the call of fair journalistic comment”.
President Kovind nominated Gogoi to Rajya Sabha on Monday. Describing the appointment, the daily said, “Kovind, not Covid, did it”. TNN
