Southern Railway

Southern Railway was created on 14th April 1951 after the assimilation of three state railways which are Madras and Southern Mahratta Railway, Mysore state railway, as well as South Indian Railway. It provides railway transport over an extensive area of India’s Southern Peninsula that spreads over the states of Tamilnadu, Pondicherry, Kerala, and even a small area of Andhra Pradesh. While offering railway transport over naturally endowed and culturally lavish southern states, the Southern Railway also spreads from Mangalore all the way to the west coast. It extends to Kanniyakumari in the southern areas, Renigunta found in the North West, and also Gudar located in the North East. The headquarters are in Chennai, but it has other five divisions which include Tiruchirapalli, Salem, Madurai, Palghat, as well as Trivandrum. In essence, approximately 500 million passengers use the Southern Railway every year. The largest part of its revenue is from passengers and not freights as is the case for most other Indian railways.
