The Transport Department, Government of Punjab which functions under the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 under section 213, was set up to enforce all the provisions of the Act. It issues driving licenses after attending the driving school of the department; issues vehicles registration and fitness certificates etc. What this website was built for is to give information on the various fees and taxes, permits, pollution control, vehicles registration, issuance of licenses and vehicle certificates etc.
The Department is headed by a State Transport Commissioner and assisted by two additional state commissioners with unit offices which make the administration decentralized and closer to the people. These units are headed by district Vehicle Inspectors to ensure strict compliance to transport rules, registrations, licensing and payments etc.
The main objective of the Department is to combat road accidents which stem from untrained and unlicensed driving. Penalties are also meted out on individuals who flout traffic rules and regulations. Individuals are declared certified and fit to handle the steering on roads after meeting all requirements and training of the Transport Department.
