A rape survivor set herself on fire after being allegedly pressured by her tormentors, out on bail, to withdraw the case. The incident happened in Uttar Pradesh’s Farrukhabad district under Fatehgarh police station limits.
The girl, who was gang-raped last year, was rushed to the district hospital and later referred to a private hospital where she is fighting for her life, battling burn injuries. The rape incident dates back to January 2021, when the two accused abducted the girl while she was out in the fields, police said.
The accused, who were granted bail in the month of August, started blackmailing the girl that they wouldn’t allow her marriage to take place. Upset over constant threats, the rape survivor set herself ablaze by pouring diesel on her body and was undergoing treatment at Safai Medical College.
The two accused, who managed to get bail earlier this year in August, threatened the girl to withdraw the case or face dire consequences. The accused were constantly mounting pressure on her due to which she took the extreme step on November 7.
When her condition showed slight improvement, her family members took her to a private hospital. The father of the girl has filed a police complaint against the two accused, identified as Shiv Om and Ankit, and efforts are underway to arrest them.
Speaking to India Today, the victim’s father said, “Two men from the same village raped my daughter and we had also filed a complaint at Fatehgarh police station. After the accused were released from jail, they started threatening my daughter to withdraw the case or they wouldn’t allow her marriage to take place. The two men made my daughter’s life hell and she set herself on fire.”
Superintendent of Police, Ashok Meena, said, “A case has been registered against the accused for threatening a rape survivor. We are trying our best to arrest the accused as soon as possible.”
