The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) was founded to handle issues relating to food in different departments and ministries. Their major functions include laying down food standards as well as regulating the manufacture, distribution, storage, import and sale of food.
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) was founded by the 2006 Food Safety and Standard Act to perform a series of functions including creating framework for regulations to outline the guidelines and standards in relation to food articles and listing out relevant structures to make sure the standards are adhered to, putting in place guidelines and mechanisms for giving certifications to institutions that would certify management system for food safety and putting in place guidelines and procedure for laboratories accreditation as well as notifications for laboratories that were accredited. Other functions include providing technical support and scientific advice to Central and State Government in policy formulation as well as collating data on consumption of food and other food-related statistics.
