Indian Railway Service of Mechanical Engineers (IRSME) is under the control of the government of India. The engineers are responsible for handling the Mechanical engineering organization of the Indian Railways. The officers are selected on the basis of their engineering services exam and Special class railway apprentice exam. The main functions of IRSME are Crew management, stock management, ensuring power availability, traffic control, repairs, and manufacturing etc. The mechanical department is responsible for the coaches and wagons whereas the electrical department looks after the air conditioning on the coaches. A Member mechanical heads the IRSME. The Chief mechanical engineer heads in each zone. There are a technical supervisor and the assistant Divisional engineer also provides assistance. The workshops undertaken by IRSME are the responsibility of the zonal railways and hence are monitored by the Chief Works manager. The production unit is directly controlled by the ministry. The production units are located at 6 places Varanasi, Chittaranjan, Chennai, Kapurthala, Patiala, Bangalore, Gwalior, and Bareily.
