It has a history of more than 130 years; it is a reliable and time-tested exercise which has been bringing accurate statistics every 10 years, beginning from 1872 when the first census was conducted in India in different parts. The site provides the history of the census process in India and gives a list of the Registrar Generals and Census Commissioners, in India from 1949 onwards. The website has a provision for people to register the birth or death of a person and has a population finder from the 2011 census results. Under the 2011 Census Data section information about Population Enumeration Data, Housing and House listing Data is provided. Acts, Rules, and Notifications about the 2011 Census Data are also provided. Other information provided on the website includes the Sample Registration system, the Civil Registration System, Annual Health Survey etc. The website provides information about current openings at Census India for anyone interested in working there.
